Process of Final Project:

Influenced by Dev Gupta and Josh Davis; I chose a pastel yellow as my background.

I began by creating a silhouette of a face; I chose to draw it from a sideways point of view so I would have more scope when it came to adding design and it still being recognisable as a face. Once again I chose a pastel lilac for the face; keeping the colour light.

Thinking about my brief and the idea that this is for an exhibition called WE ARE HUMANS; I tried out adding another face -reflective of the relationships between people. After rotating and trying out different layouts I found a design I was happy to work with.

Here I am trying to reflect two people. I wanted my work to be questionable -not too obvious but I also wanted a clear differentiation between the two faces; almost like male and female or two opposing personalities or two opposing emotions etc. As I was sure I wanted to design one of the faces in a style influenced by Simon Bent I started to think about designs that would be opposing. Simon Bent’s designs are colourful and include shapes that flow and express freedom. Taking this into consideration I wanted to use harder shapes; with straight edges and dark colours. My thoughts lead me to this:

In order to ensure these shapes could be read as human faces I had to add facial features; I decided that eyes and mouth would be most important. Sticking to my previous thoughts I quiet the shapes consistent with the contrasting feeling I wanted to create.

Happy with the left-hand face and that it conveyed the persona I intended I move onto the right. Using Simon Bent’s work as a reference and incorporating my own style I tried out different shapes and colours until I was happy with the right-hand face also.

The text was hugely influenced by Dev Gupta; I wanted it to be direct and simple; ensuring the images were at the for-front. I included the basic information; what the event was, the name of the event, and the name of the degree and university.

Final project idea:

To design a press-pack for a media practice exhibition called: WE ARE HUMANS. Strongly influenced by both Milton Glaser and Simon Bent my main design will be focused around the human face. Other influences include Saul Bass and Dev Gupta who both often use one strong image in their designs; I hope to do the same. I want to keep the text simple, clean and minimalistic.

After researching Milton Glaser I decided I wanted my final design to include a human face; I wanted to create my own interpretation of a human and thought it could be an interesting design idea which would attract attention towards my poster. Referring back to the brief being a press-pack for a media practice exhibition; my design could act as an example of what the exhibition was to be about.

I carried on researching to find other designs of the human face and came across Simon Bent. He had created colourful illustrations of the greatest scientific figures from history. I was drawn to the psychedelic patterns - very reminiscent of the 60′s and wanted to create my own trippy images.

Researching designers

Milton Glaser

Glaser is a New York designer best known for the I Love New York logo -an example comparable to the style of the rest of his work; simple, clear and direct.

‘One of a rare bread of intellectual designer-illustrators, who brings a depth of understanding and conceptual thinking, combined with a diverse richness of visual language, to his highly inventive and individualistic work.’

His work which appealed to me most was the designs incorporating the human face. Within art I have always been interested in the different ways the human face can be both interpreted and presented.

Josh Davis

Davis describes his work as ‘dynamic abstraction.’ His work includes organic shapes, text elements and other symbols. He works in an experimental way - not knowing how something may or may not turn out - he likes the surprising sense of discovery. I really like the freedom his work conveys.

Whilst researching Stefan Sagmeister I came across Jessica Walsh, another New York based designer.
